There are many advantages to being a competitive highland dancer as opposed to a non-competitive highland dancer. Competitions are an excellent way to track progress and personal achievements aside from what is noticed in class. It is a great way to build self-confidence and motivation. It gives a dancer a goal to work towards besides just learning new dances.

There is a great opportunity to see wonderful sites through highland dance, having competitions and Highland games located all over the country, and the world for that matter. If you don’t want to travel far to compete, you don’t have to. In Michigan alone there are five competitions each year, this doesn’t include the ones just over the border in Canada, where you could probably compete every other weekend if you wanted to!

There are different types of competitions one can enter. At first, while in the primary, beginner, novice and intermediate categories, a dancer would compete in just regular competitions. Once a dancer reaches the premier level, they can compete in pre-championships and championships.

Through competing, there is a possibility to build lasting relationships with other dancers not only in the studio, but with dancers from all over the region, country and possibly the world. It is so much fun to be a part of the competition excitement!
